Carnegie Mellon Qatar Students Make an Impact at the Robotics Institute

Carnegie Mellon’s global network of alumni and current scholars help to build bridges between institutions and organizations. CMU alumnus Sabih Bin Wasi and CMU Q faculty worked together with the Robotics Institute to create student research opportunities via Robotics Institute Summer Scholars (RISS) Program. RISS is an intensive summer research program for talented undergraduate students from around the world. Summer scholars participate in state-of-the-art research projects, interact with a diverse research team, are mentored by leading faculty and technical staff, and experience the culture of Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. RISS co-director, Rachel Burcin, commented that “CMU Q students have made meaningful contributions and impact to the research and learning experience. CMU RISS partners create possibilities and new opportunities that students might not even have imagined were possible. They have a huge role in shaping futures.”

Aisha Hassam Mohamed
Mentored by Prof. David Bourne
Research Poster: http://bit.ly/2017MohamedDuring her time with RISS, Aisha’s research focused on localizing a particular workpiece based on data extracted from the Computer Aided Design (CAD) files. Once located, this initial estimate was utilized to further pose precision. Aisha has received numerous awards and recognition for her contributions in leadership in STEM.

Rohith Krishnan Pillai
Mentored by Dr. Jack Mostow
Research Poster: http://bit.ly/2017PillaiDuring his time with RISS, Rohith analyzed student behavior when interacting with a robot tutor. He achieved this by using the relationship between affective states and real-time behaviors. Rohith is a current masters student at Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute.
