Major:
Computer Science
Mentor:
Dr. Artur W. Dubrawski
University:
Miami University

Ryan is a rising senior at Miami University studying computer science and data science and statistics. His research has focused on network science, modeling and simulation, and applied machine learning and computer vision in two domains. First, he applied network science and simulation for adolescent suicide prevention in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Second, he created algorithms supporting the usage of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps, an interpretable graph-based simulation model. Additionally, he has leveraged transfer learning and object detection to help Miami University’s library. This summer, Ryan is working in the Auton Lab with Dr. Artur Dubrawski. Specifically, he will work on fluid resuscitation sufficiency analysis for patients airlifted to or between hospitals. Overall, he is interested in developing novel interpretable/explainable machine learning methods and applying them to healthcare. Ryan thinks explainable and trustworthy models are crucial to the adoption of machine learning methods, especially in sensitive domains like health care. He plans on applying for Ph.D. programs in computer science or machine learning with a research focus in machine learning, likely on explainable models and healthcare applications. He’s excited about this opportunity to gain further machine learning research experience and participate in RISS. Ryan is grateful to Dr. Dubrawski and the RISS team and sponsors for giving him this opportunity!
