FICCI Supports Futures in Robotics & AI

Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute Summer Scholar’s Program extends thanks to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) for supporting partial scholarships for Indian students. FICCI supported students from Delhi Technological University, IIIT Delhi, Jadavpur University, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras to conduct research alongside renowned leaders in robotics & AI at Carnegie Mellon University as part of the CMU RI Summer Scholars Program.

I am working with Dr. Martial Hebert and Dr. Luis Navarro on tracking pedestrian and vehicle tracking in videos. We created one single temporally-consistent end-to-end trained neural network which combines the task of detection, segmentation, tracking and motion-forecasting. We built on top of the existing Mask-RCNN architecture and extended to incorporate the modules for tracking and motion forecasting. Mask-RCNN is used for detection and segmentation on images. My work essentially extend Mask-RCNN to work with image sequences or videos adding temporal connections.

The summer program is a great opportunity to surround yourself with brilliant minds in Carnegie Mellon. It is a one of a kind experience. Being guided by pioneers like Dr. Hebert and Dr. Navarro has taught me things that cannot be learnt from textbooks. As an international student, it opens up new avenues that I had never imagined possible. All these was made possible by the whole RISS program committee who found me worthy of it. Special thanks to Rachel Burcin and Dr. John Dolan for all the time and hard work they devote to the program. Finally, I would like to thank FICCI for the support they are providing in the form of funding for Indian students like me. Opportunities like this are a big motivator for the students and FICCI should continue their support in the years to come.
